Antur Stiniog – Round 6 of the British Downhill series commemorates “Pioneer” Jason McRoy

Round 6 – September 19/20th Antur Stiniog, Gwynedd in Wales.

Round 6 of the British Downhill series comes to Antur Stiniog, Gwynedd on the 19th and 20th of September.

The final stage of the 2015 Series will see competitors from all age ranges pushing themselves to the limit to grab not just the glory of the prize money on offer but set personal bests in order to set themselves their 2016 targets.

Antur Stiniog has a bit of everything to test every level of rider and the rain thrown on to the course this week will make it even more challenging than normal.
Speeds may be down if the wet weather continues but excitement will most certainly be up!

The gathering will also see a one off Legends category introduced to commemorate Jason McRoy who sadly passed away 20 years ago.

Jason was a pioneer of the British Mountain biking scene and the first british rider to join an American professional mountain bike team. He was also a Uk National downhill champion, and so everything that these Round 6 riders aspire to be.

Jason died age 23 in a tragic motorcycle accident in August 1995.

Inducted into the Cycling Hall of fame in 2009, Jason didn’t start mountain biking until he was 17. He’d formerly been a successful junior BMX rider, but after a serious leg injury he took to Downhill and in his very first competitive race, despite still being registered as a Junior, his time was sufficiently quick for him to take third place overall.

McRoy rose to international prominence after taking second place in the prestigious Mammoth Kamikaze race in 1993, the first year that the event was held to the ‘Eliminator’ format. It was following this success that Specialized USA signed him for the 1994 season .

A wealth of talent will be turning out for this one off spectacle. Riders already confirmed are:

Rob Warner, Steve Peat, Will Longden, Nigel Page, Andrew Parks, Andrew Titley, Andy Pope, Billy Cheetham, Carl Alford, Cheesy Pete Lawrie, Clive Gosling, Darren Howarth, Dave Hemming, Dave Wardell, Ed Moseley, Lewis King, James Allaway, Jason Jessop, Jim Buchanan, Jonathan Cheetham, Keith Wilson, Lee Bertram, Martin Ogden, Martin Hawyes, Matt Farmer, Paul Smith, Pete Crump, Scott Beaumont, Steve Geall, Stu Hughes and Tim Ponting.
