Excitement is building across North Wales, as thousands of geocachers travel to the region ready for Mega 2016, on Saturday 6th August!
As an official sponsor, Extreme North Wales has been working with the committee to promote the Mega and show the geocaching community exactly what North Wales has to offer. We will be attending as many events as possible and hope to see you there.
Traditionally, the annual UK Mega has a week long build up of side events leading up to the Mega Day itself. This year’s event in Llangollen is no different and below you can see a taster of the week’s activities.
Be sure to check out the North Wales Mega 2016 website for full details; where you can also purchase merchandise and meet the Committee!
With many Geocachers travelling into the area to start their week of camping, there will be a couple of “Meet and Greet” events to kick things off. Traditionally, “the Imp” has held an event to serve as a pit stop on the way to the annual UK Mega week. 2016 will not be an exception!
The Mega’s first side event will be an opportunity to meet the organising team and the other attendees who arrive on Monday. It will be held at the Mega Campsite with an evening bar and hot food available.
Tuesday sees a day of new Earth Caches in Snowdonia, in the beautiful valley of Cwmorthin. There may well be some new traditional caches thrown in for good measure. The event runs from 10am – 4pm.
In the evening it’s time for Mega Film Night at the campsite! A team of professional photographers have shortlisted your entries and the finalists will be shown to the geocachers in attendance, who will be asked to vote for the winners.
Visit the magnificent Bala Lake, with plans for new caches including a Whereirow and a non Wherigo alternative. Or if you are not keen on getting wet, why not have a picnic on the lakeside and watch the proceedings from the shore?
In the evening, nightwalkers will be sent out in timed groups on a “Medieval Knight” trail. There will be hot food and a bar available on site in the Mega Campsite marquee.
A visit to North Wales would not be complete without a visit to Snowdon; the highest point in the British Isles (outside the Scottish Highlands.) The event smiley will be achievable by hiking, or riding the train to the summit, or just dropping by to say hello at the base of the mountain.
After working up a hunger from tackling the summit, cachers will return to the official campsite for a Mexican night!
“Ddraig’s Big Day Out” will provide a medley of activities at Chirk Boathouse. New caches will be published and TNR Coaching will provide gorge walking, climbing, canoeing and bushcraft with experienced, qualified instructors. Extreme North Wales will be tackling a 100ft abseil overlooking the Dee Valley!
Later, there will be a carnival party back at the campsite, with a children’s parade and a pizza oven onsite!
The 9th Annual UK Mega Event comes to Llangollen Pavilion, North Wales, on Saturday 6th August 2016 from 10:00am until 16:00pm.
The event is open to ALL and is free to attend. There will be a number of activities taking place on the day of the event and you can visit the GPS Maze Europe exhibit. See if you can find us somewhere around the site, as we will be handing out leaflets with details of a special prize draw, where you can win clothing from Polaris Bikewear!
Visit the Rhug Estate in Corwen. With Mega Week reaching its conclusion, the North Wales UK Mega 2016 team will hand over to the Devon UK Mega 2017 team.
Then its back to the campsite, where the Devonians will be hosting a quiz.
Farewell to North Wales! All good things must come to an end…A final chance to say goodbye to friends old and new at the campsite.
Don’t forget to Like the events page on Facebook and Follow the Mega on Twitter. We look forward to meeting you all at the events!
